When Xbox and Soap Creative wanted some comedic and engaging family focused social content leading into the Christmas rush, Engine Room Productions turned to the biggest Kidult Director they knew.

Sean and his team to worked with the talented Millie (8) and Jake (6) to breath life into a mature script you’d be more likely to hear in a board meeting than a playroom. Lot of sugar, consentration and staminer were needed onset to deliver the 4 videos and that was just for Director, our little superstars did an amazing job adding personality and comic timing to the content, which we think no parent could ignore.

Newtown Fixers Club is a original 6 part scripted comedy series for the web. The show is grounded in the diversity and obscurity of the progressive, artistic, sometimes bohemian culture found in Sydney’s inner west. The series follows a group of likeminded local misfits who attempt to fix the world’s problems, one small issue at a time. Inspired by real characters living in Newtown and set against a backdrop of real locations, the group solve real problems suggested by real members of community and on social media.

Synopsis: A group of unlikely citizens form a social vigilante group with the aim of fixing the world one small problem at a time.

Like: Misfits meets Portlandia

Using interviews captured with real local people we will create episodes that capture the passion and spirit of the Sydneys inner west. The project recently received support and funding from Marrickville Council. In the rst instance with the material we will be celebrating the voices of the inner west and their passion for the social issues.

PROGRESS:

THE INTERVIEWS

The Newtown Fixers Club interviews are a series of 3min conversations with real people from the town of Newtown NSW and the Inner West of Sydney. The project aims to showcase passionate people from a number of different walks of life and aims to show their personal stories of how they become impacted by a range of social topic.

We see the inner west as a model for modern Australia with a wealth of diversity living very comfortably together and creating one hell of a inclusive colourful creative place in one of Sydney’s most densly populated suburbs.

Getty asked six Australian and New Zealand creative teams to make a short film using our footage and one of six themes. This is what they came up with:

I wrote, produced and directed the video for King Content as part of their entry. We knew we had to take a comedic approach. Our idea – “Danger, as you don’t know it” – was inspired by the statistical truth that you are more likely to be killed by the mundane and lame than the obvious and scary.

With a strong movie voiceover, we really went to town with Getty Images footage, animating key scenes including an unlikely vending machine accident and a cow with rage issues causing mayhem on the highway.

The videos provide tips for dads on how to change, feed, wrap and hold a baby safely and easily. The videos are part of a campaign to encourage dads to be more involved to help support mums in the first 1000 days of parenthood.

I wrote, directed and produced the content over a day with a professional actor on location. This project was produced in just over a week from first draft script to final edit.
